We all enjoy food, and our bodies are programmed to give us pleasure eating. This has been an evolutionary adaptation to ensure our bodies are well nourished to prepare for times of need.
Signals are sent to our brains by hormones (chemical messages in the blood stream) and nerves. Many of these are triggered by an empty stomach.
If your weight has become a health problem, then you may have tried dieting, exercise or other means of addressing this. These steps are most natural and remain very important. If your weight remains a problem, a medical management plan should be instituted. An option often recommended by your GP at this stage are medications.
These include tablet forms and newer injectable forms. The later have become commonly used as they act to suppress the signals of hunger, desire to eat and make you feel fuller earlier. These are prescription medications only and have strict criteria for indications as determined by your doctor.
The upsides of them are that they simple to take and can be stopped at any stage. They can have side effects. The main downsides are that they tend not to produce such a profound weight loss (especially when compared to surgery) and that they may need to be taken long term. These are also self injected by you and have ongoing costs. Currently the only approved medication needs to be injected everyday and is charged each month.
These can be prescribed potentially by your GP after a consultation. There are some included support programs offered in conjunction with the medications.
It is important to note that unless you make substantial changes to the core reasons for your weight gain, the weight would be regained on stopping the medication. This has been shown in sceintific studies.
